The five element form of feng shui classifies various aspects of interior design and feng shui artwork according to their relationship to the predominant forces in nature. The Chinese five element system views wood, fire, earth, metal and water as the primary natural elements. Homes, interior decor and feng shui artwork may be balanced through using one or more of the five elements. This can be done by using feng shui artwork depicting one or more of the five elements, by using the actual element for construction (i.e. wood), or by using something that is symbolic of the element (i.e. fountain) or by using colors or shapes representing the element. The water and wood elements interact with each other: water causes wood to grow and wood absorbs water.

Wood energy is constantly in motion, driven to grow and expand like the green shoots bursting forth in spring. A person with a predominantly wood personality seeks new challenges and adventures. Wood personalities tend to be competitive, bold, direct and ambitious. If you desire to strengthen the qualities of wood in your personality, the most appropriate feng shui artwork would include landscapes, florals, and gardens or abstract art utilizing the colors of wood and mimicking the patterns of bark, growth rings or other aspects of wood.

The wood element represents intuition, luck, confidence, and trust. Wood is associated with the colors green and brown. The wood element is also associated with the tiger and rabbit in the Chinese zodiac. In the constructive/destructive cycles of nature, metal cuts wood and wood moves earth. Understanding the creative and destructive cycles of nature also help to balance the elements by increasing or decreasing one or more elements. For example, if an environment has too much wood, you can decrease the wood element by adding feng shui artwork featuring the metal element.

Pictured: Modern Feng Shui Wall Art (Water Element)

The feng shui symbols associated with the water element reflect the ideas of clarity and reflection. The feng shui symbols in the natural materials category are glass and crystals. Placing crystals or glass objects in a room will help to increase the water energy. The gems and minerals associated with the water element are quartz, aquamarine and sapphire. The connection is the clear of blue colors in these gems. The feng shui symbols for the water element in the shape category include all free flowing shapes such as irregular circles. Think of the shapes that a lake or a body of water night take. Likewise, design motifs for the water element would be smooth, flowing patterns without angles or straight edges.

Artwork exhibiting feng shui symbols for water are fairly self-explanatory: pictures of rivers, rain, waterfalls, oceans or streams. Structures that can serve as feng shui symbols for water include mirrors, birdbaths, fountains and aquariums. Be careful with mirrors that the object being reflected are objects that you want to increase in your life. For example, you might want to have a mirror in your kitchen that reflects that stove or dining table so that an abundance of food will be emphasized. You would not want a mirror placed where it would reflect an alley, a bathroom or a place for garbage disposal.

The quality of the water element is very yin, meaning that it is very light, feminine and expansive. The feng shui symbols in the animal kingdom are tortoises. To multiply this effect, statues often include multiple tortoises, such as smaller tortoises riding on the back of larger tortoises. The colors associated with the water element are black, blue and grey.

Balancing all of the five elements in your home or office can lead to a more enjoyable, prosperous life. Achieving balance through five element feng shui is a matter of emphasizing one or more elements for an intended purpose. Each of the five elements support or nourish each other in some way and can also limit or control each other in other ways. Creating your own personal paradise in your surroundings with an appropriate balance of the five elements will result in a strong foundation for increased happiness and success in all areas of your life.

Feng Shui? What is it? A relatively simple question that can be difficult to answer. It is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years (some sources state 7,000 years) ago in China. Simply put it is a body of knowledge about balancing the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.

Feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture wind and water are associated with good health, thus good feng shui came to mean good fortune, while bad feng shui means misfortune.

The art of placement is a good way to describe feng shui. Placement of your furniture, belongings and even yourself within your home or surroundings largely determines your experience. It provides a way of bringing balance, comfort, and harmony into your environment.

We are approaching the topic from a fun standpoint. In other words, we are keeping it light-hearted by sharing three basic principles to get you started. However, we will provide a glimpse of the basis of feng shui.

The Ba Gua and The Compass

The Bagua map, sometimes referred to as a “treasure map”, is used as a guide to help you map the energies of your home along with a compass. The Ba-Gua is an octagonal grid containing the symbols of the I Ching, the ancient oracle on which Feng Shui is based. Knowing the Bagua of your home will help you understand the connection of specific areas of your home to specific areas of your life.

The Lo-Pan is the name of the compass. It is used to define the Bagua of a home in order to access deeper information about a site or a building.

Mastering Feng Shui could take years. It certainly can not be done by simply reading a book or visiting a website. Still, its principles are grounded in common sense and practicality. Thus, following a few simple rules may improve the surroundings in which you live.

Now, let’s get on to the fun part.

Principle #1
Clear clutter to harness positive energy and allow it to flow freely. Remove all obstacles, especially when you enter a room to create more open space and not obstruct the flow of energy.

Principle #2
The fish tank is considered an energy attractor because it has all the five elements with it; that is, water that fills the tank, sand, gravel and small stones, plants and other wooden structures in the aquarium (element wood), the metallic frame of the tank and the stand (element metal) and finally the yellow and orange colors of gold fish (used to bring prosperity) and other fish and the aquarium lighting (element fire). Never place an aquarium in your bedroom, or in your kitchen, as this brings unwanted energies to these two areas. In other words, an aquarium is bad Feng Shui for your bedroom and your kitchen.

Principle #3
Last, but certainly not least I want to share bedroom tips with you because most people spend a great deal of time there. The door should open at last 90 degrees to prevent restriction. Avoid stimulating wall colors; i.e., red or gold, opt for pastels. Do not have a sharp corner facing your bed. Mirrors should not be placed at the foot of the bed, rather to the side of the bed or at an angle. Bed placement under an exposed beam – this is considered a symbol of oppression and will subconsciously offset any feelings of peace or harmony your bedroom gives you.

Never place an aquarium in your bedroom, or in your kitchen, as this brings unwanted Feng Shui energies to these two areas. In other words, an aquarium is bad Feng Shui for your bedroom and your kitchen. Coupling Feng Shui with ethnic home decor is easy. You will have a blast as you incorporate these principles and benefit from the positive changes they bring to your life.

Moorish style or Moroccan ethnic home decor is generally inspired by multiple cultures and ethnicities. If you are considering re-designing your house to have the Moorish look, you will find that Moroccan home decor collection is influenced by different cultures all over the world. French style is apparent in their art, and Arabic style has great significance in Moorish furniture and architecture.

Moroccan ethnic home decor can be categorized into two types, the urban decor and the rural decor. Understandably, the urban decor is greatly influenced by their neighbouring countries of Europe where use of metal, ceramics, wood and leather is rampant. The rural decor has huge inclination to be identified with the Middle East making use of rugs and embroideries; with fabric and textile as their main items.

Bright natural colors are one of the most significant details you can find in this beautiful style of interior design. They have a passion to use earth colors that they feel represents their culture. The blue of the sea and the gold of the dessert are the two most used shade. They normally combine these with yellow, green, orange and purple. The key is to have a sense of vibrancy, as such, any color will do provided that is it bright and vibrant. Mosaic is greatly appreciated in Moroccan standard; you can find mosaics created in bright colors on doors, windows and tables. Since Morocco is a tropical country, their houses will never do without plants. A textured green wall can create an illusion of a forest, making the surrounding warm and relaxing.

Pictured: Moroccan Leather Poufs

Now, the most distinct feature this brand of ethnic home decor can offer is the lighting. Lighting is one of the most important attribute of a Moroccan house. They normally use wide variety of different lights in their home such as, Moroccan chandeliers, Moroccan scones, lanterns, hanging pendants and lamps. Normally, these lights have a Moroccan unique design handcrafted from Moroccan solid brass with very intricate and elaborately sophisticated patterns.

Moroccan ethnic home decor is not about smooth and flawless style. They generally love texture and shapes. A typical Moroccan home will most likely consist of different rugs that were created using different materials and designed having different shapes and patterns. Draperies are also lavishly textured created from thick fabrics in colorful design and patterns. However, this is much apparent in a rural decor than the urban decor since urban decor are more westernized than the other. Note also that Moroccans love jewels, you can find their pillows and cushion with jewels embedded on it.

In creating a Moroccan home, bear in mind that theirs is a rich culture with a long history and many influences. There are many choices you can choose to get the look and feel you desire.

Indian inspired décor is characterized by ornate architecture, bold colors, and an overall feeling of vibrancy. Lavish art and accessories are common elements of Indian themed décor designs. Inspiration for design ideas may be drawn from Indian clothing (i.e. saris), Bollywood movies, and books and magazines.

The first step in decorating a room with an Indian inspired theme is to select the color palette. Bright jewel tones are the most common examples of the Indian color palette, including red, gold, orange, purple, green, and turquoise. One color should be chosen as the base color, and the rest of the color palette can be incorporated into the room through the use of fabrics, textiles, and accessories. A focal point may be created within the room by painting an accent wall in a different, but complementary, color. However, this focal point may also be created by artfully draping fabric across the wall or using a textile with an interesting pattern.

The second step in designing Indian inspired décor is to determine the architectural elements that one would like to display in the room. Crown molding, ceiling medallions, and elaborately carved door frames are common design elements in this type of décor. Most design experts recommend painting these pieces white, so that they provide a unifying element throughout the room. The next item to take into consideration is the draperies. The draperies should reflect bold colors and patterns, such as gold thread embroidery or beaded embellishments over rich, jewel tones.

Artwork featured throughout the room should be displayed in ornately carved frames to create an element of visual interest. Alternately, one may choose to paint a henna inspired design on a length of canvas or frame an eye-catching piece of fabric. Everyday throw pillows may be dressed up by affixing beading or fringe to their hem, or a person may choose to create their own throw pillows out of saris. Likewise, bookcases and doorways may be decorated with beaded curtains. Other accessories that one may use to decorate an Indian inspired room include floor pillows, Indian ceremonial masks, Persian rugs, and mahogany carvings.

Finally, consider swapping out the existing lighting fixtures in a room for a more ornate chandelier. The scale of the chandelier should be on par with the size of the room, to avoid dwarfing the space. Many homeowners like to choose chandeliers that feature crystal pendants in their design, because the pendants are adept at reflecting the various colors of the room. Indian inspired décor follows the principle that “more is more”, you do not need to worry about going overboard with accessories, colors, or textures so long as the room being decorated is still functional and livable.

Now that your mind is in gear perhaps you would like more information about Indian inspired home decor. Never fear, I have FREE design ideas for you.

Do you want to add a spark of magic, erotica or exotic ambience to your bedroom? Then consider updating your bedroom decor with an Indian inspired design theme. You can easily create a room where you can relax and indulge your every fantasy whether alone or with that someone special. There are a myriad of options available to you with the use of subdued lighting, textiles, textures, color, and even scented candles to awaken your sensuality. Let’s get to it!

Bedroom Furniture

Set the stage with your bed! It is the focal point of your Indian inspired room. Go with a low-profile, minimally ornamented piece. Floating shelves with a table top water fountain. For your storage needs consider dressers or armoires that lend themselves to open and closed storage.

Ladies, I want you to consider your senses as you begin to think about your love nest. Smell, sight, touch and sound can be the basis for creating the aura that you desire. Remember, you are going not only for a look, but the feel of your special area. It will be an extension of who you are.

For instance the skin and touch involve tactile sensations that affect our most basic emotions and feelings of comfort and security. Use the texture of fabrics that will make long lasting impressions; i.e., those that are luxurious and soft yet natural like silk sheets and bedding which are intricate to an Indian inspired decor.

Tradition has it that an Indian inspired bedroom would be chock full of vibrant color. Take a look at the likes of bright orchid or a sultry spice curry. Maroon, gold, bright orange, pinks, purples, fuchsias, warm reds, and yellows are all on point for your room. Walls should be a bright color and not diluted by white trim or ceilings.
The Kama Sutra, known as a theme of romance, sexuality, and lovemaking has its roots in India. How about adding a large canopy bed with silk screens to create a love nest! For flavor copiously add silk cushions and dark silk sheets to heighten the romantic sensations. Bring in some throw rugs made of textiles such as blended silk and linen, curtains with gold embroidered trimming. Truly a sexy woman’s dream room.

Smell: Harness the power aromatherapy, the use of volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. For instance, did you know the sense of smell is tied directly to the part of the brain that is linked to memory and emotion? Different scents produce different emotions and reactions and make us feel a certain way. Essential oils and scents for you to explore include: sandalwood, neroli absolute, lavender, orange, patchouli, clary sage, and ylang ylang to get you started. Remember a little goes a long way as essential oils are strong.

Sound: Humans use a wide range of cues, both non-verbal and verbal, to share information. You will too as you live your dreams day-to-day. Relaxing music can serve as a tool to enhance sleep or other things. Bamboo flute music could be one of the choices for your bedroom. Bubbling water is also very relaxing. You have choices of table or wall fountains. These may be bamboo tabletop or spouts or mist fountains that benefit you in the following ways:

Bamboo Table Fountain

A natural humidity source

Relaxes you: muscle and mind

Enhances positive energy

Sight: Color, color and more color! Color is the easiest and most impressive tool for decorating. Vibrant jewel tones are the way to go: reds, greens, saffron, yellows and blues. As complementary colors use whites and natural earthen tones. Color exerts influence on the attitude of your bedroom and the mood or tone that you want to achieve.

Touch: Nothing feels as sultry on the skin as silk. Silk is a clever use of fabric and intricate to Indian inspired ethnic decor. You will not be at a loss when it comes to incorporating texture in your room. For instance, luxurious, heavy drapes with designs of Indian culture set a sultry mood. If your taste lends itself to a lighter touch try using saris as curtains. These come in 6-foot lengths and may also be used as bed, sofa, and floor cushions. You are limited only by your imagination!

Here’s a fun idea: In addition to curtains and pillow-covers, you also hang saris on your walls. Use thin wooden dowels sitting on cup-hooks into the ceiling. Simply drape the sari in half over the dowel and have an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling saris!

Have fun decorating!

This particular design aesthetic is characterized by embroidered tapestries and upholstery, clean, simple lines in the furniture, and the addition of numerous sculptures and accent pieces.
Chinese furniture is quite traditional and ethnic in its appearance, and an individual should carefully choose a selection of furniture in order to achieve this aesthetic. There are several common types of furniture used in creating Chinese décor. The first piece of furniture is a bench. In ancient Chinese culture, sitting benches were often preferred over sofas or chairs. These benches were generally constructed of teakwood, and their cushions were constructed from fabrics in deep colors of maroon, green, and blue. It was not unusual then, nor in modern times, to find embroidery on these cushions in colors of white, gold, and silver.

The second piece of furniture commonly used in Chinese décor is a living room cabinet. Also constructed of teakwood, these small cabinets are used primarily to display interesting objects. It is not uncommon to find their tops constructed of marble. The body of the cabinet is enclosed in order to provide storage space. Low tables are a well known element of Chinese décor. They are also frequently featured in Japanese design schemes as well.

Although they are commonly used as dining room tables in China, they are also used in living rooms to provide additional seating. The tables are accompanied by embroidered cushioning for guests to kneel upon. These cushions are generally constructed from the same fabric that is used on the Chinese bench cushions. The Chinese décor of a room can be enhanced by the strategic placement of Chinese statues and artifacts around the room. These statues are generally painted in bright primary colors, such as red, blue, and yellow. Their motif commonly depicts human figures, dragons, and characters from Japanese folklore.

Bamboo is a common element in many Asian design decors. It is thought to be adept at incorporating the feng shui element of wood into a home. However, it also has many more practical purposes. This type of wood is rather durable and lightweight, and it can be constructed into a variety of different objects. Bamboo furniture has recently seen a surge in popularity within the United States.

Created by skilled artisans, it is similar to wicker in its durability and comfort level. Common furniture items created from bamboo include chairs, tables, swings, and settees. Due to bamboo’s lightweight properties, this type of furniture is rather easy to position and organize as desired. Bamboo is also commonly used in decorative, artistic pieces. It is commonly featured in planters, wastebaskets, jewelry boxes, and even dishware. The aforementioned items can vary greatly in pricing. The size of a bamboo piece, as well as the amount of true bamboo in the object, will affect how expensive or affordable a particular item is.

Instruments are also commonly constructed from bamboo. This practice originated in Asian countries due to the fact that bamboo is sturdy and does not break when placed under duress. Because these instruments require a particular level of skill and time to create, they are rather expensive. However, they also tend to be passed down from one family member to another. Even if an individual does not play an instrument, a bamboo instrument can be prominently displayed in on a wall or in a cabinet as a showpiece.

Bamboo is a flexible wood, and it is even used as flooring in homes. However, it will enhance whatever decorating scheme it is incorporated into. It is most commonly accented in décor with colors of green, blue, and other natural earth tones. Although this material has increased in popularity, it may be difficult to locate in some parts of the country. Online retailers that specialize in Asian merchandise will most likely have the bamboo items that a homeowner will be looking for. The amount of effort that an individual puts into searching for their piece will be well worth it.

Asian soaking tubs offer a great way to relax. Deep soaking in hot water is also felt to offer therapeutic benefits. What makes this type of tub unique?

The activity of deep submersion bathing is found in many different cultures. In the West, the most common form of Asian baths are Japanese baths. In fact, for many Westerners, Asian baths and Japanese baths are one in the same. Because of that, we’re going to focus our attention on the Japanese bath or ofuro.

The traditional ofuro is made of hinoki wood, which is unique to Japan. Other commonly used woods are Alaskan yellow and Port Orford white cedar. It’s also now common to see them made of acrylic or stainless steel. There is generally no overflow drainage built into the tub, so commonly, there will be a floor drain near the tub.

Another unique thing about Asian baths is that they’re not really for cleaning. They are intended to be used for relaxation and for the health benefits associated with soaking in hot water. The bather cleans themselves with soap and water before they enter the tub. Then, because of the depth of the tub, they are able to fully submerge themselves and soak. Instead of lying or partially lying in the tub, the bather sits upright. There’s often a seat built into the tub to make this easier.

If you’re considering adding an Asian tub as part of a re-modeling project, there are several things to consider. First off, if you’re putting the tub in the bathroom, do you have adequate space for it? Secondly, will you be getting a model with Western style plumbing or will you need to incorporate a floor drain into the project. A small ofuro may have a liquid capacity of 70 gallons. Compare that to a conventional Western style tub’s 40 – 60 gallons. Because of this you’ll need to consider weight and hot water supply. If the new tub will require much more water than the old tub, check to make sure that the floor is strong enough for the extra weight. Also consider the capacity of your water heater. Most residential water heaters have a 30, 40, or 50 gallon capacity.

Even if it does take a little more planning than a conventional tub would, one of the current crop of Asian soaking tubs may be perfect for your home.

Your patio is more than an outdoor area where you place your outdoor grill or the area that surrounds the pool. For many homeowners, the patio is a place where they can relax and unwind, read a good book underneath the shade or host barbecues and invite friends over during the summertime. Nothing contributes more to the ambiance than artistic patio design and for many people, an Asian inspired patio design is the way to go. Now that you have your bamboo patio furniture and water fountains, you want to think about not only style but comfort. When relaxing, you want to keep yourself and your guests cool, and the best way to accomplish this is with patio ceiling fans.

Asian Inspired Choices

One of the cardinal rules of design is to mount patio fans. For the novice designer, you may not know that there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor appliances. Outdoor ceiling fans are made out of materials designed to withstand the natural elements – water vapor from humidity than can otherwise damage the motor. Most outdoor ceiling fans nowadays are equipped with a rust-proof finish and no-warp blades. Remember that these cooling devices move air. There is no direct effect to change the temperature. Instead, they provide a breeze to keep you cool and comfortable. For Asian inspired patio decor, look for models that feature bamboo or rattan blades, as these materials will coordinate well with your furniture. Fans with these features are often called tropical outdoor ceiling fans so start here when narrowing down your search for the perfect choice.

Recommended Styles

The Minka Aire Shangri La fan is a natural first choice for your patio. Minka Aire fans are well-known throughout the industry for great quality and innovative designs. This ceiling fan is designed to be used indoors or outdoors, which makes it perfect for installing in your patio. It has bamboo all-weather blades that will match nicely with your Asian themed decor. For another option in the Minka Aire family, try the Los Lunas Bahama. This model is a bit more ornate than the previous one and does not have the bamboo accents, but its eye-catching etchings on the body of the fan makes this one a good choice.

An alternative to bamboo is rattan. Rattan is a type of palm tree native to some areas of Asia. It is commonly used as material for furniture. If you have any rattan patio furniture, then the Casa Vieja Rattan Tropical Outdoor Ceiling Fan is a wonderful choice for your home. A similar alternative is the Casa Vieja Outdoor Tropical Veranda fan. These fans also come with an optional light kit if you’re looking for not only to add a nice breeze, but some light if you’re entertaining at night.

Palm leaf inspired blades also make a magnificent choice for Asian inspired rooms. The Minka Aire Gauguin fan is a very stylish option for your patio. It is sleek, contemporary, and an indoor outdoor model designed to catch attention. For other outdoor ceiling fans with palm leaf blades, try the Concord Fernleaf Breeze fan or even the Casa Vieja Tropical Leaf fan.
